Tips on Designing Your Scandinavian Bedroom

A traditional Scandinavian bedroom design is at the heart of any stylish Scandinavian home. The rich, thick furnishings, with geometric lines and dark wood finish, are a great inspiration for any bedroom. Yet simple patterns, like stripes or a monochromatic color palette, can be applied to the whole room or can be used to highlight special features. Bold colors and unusual textures can also make a statement in a traditional design, which may be more suited to an adult's bedroom. If you're thinking of redecorating, here are some tips for designing a Scandinavian bedroom.

Choose a Neutral and Warm Color Scheme

Choose a neutral, warm color scheme Use warm white as your main color, but don't use so much that it makes the room look cramped. When bright white isn't your bag, tone down your Scandinavian bedroom by splashing gray into the room in rich layers, starting with an area rug. Work in a blend of textures and colors, combining rich browns, creams and ivories, with darker nuances like black or navy blue for accent pieces. Finish off the walls with cozier looking throws and pillows in deeper browns and greys.

Use solid wood As you lay your furniture in the room, use a coordinating piece of solid wood as the focus piece on your floor. This could be an oak stand or a simple piece of pine furniture, but use solid wood to frame your headboard and bed. This will give your interior the feel of warmth, as well as adding interest to the bedding. Alternatively, consider a headboard made of wrought iron that has intricate carvings to compliment the overall feel of the Scandinavian bedroom.

Choose light colors While decorating your Scandinavian bedroom in a Scandinavian style, remember that light colors are more predominant than darker ones. This is a great way to set the ambiance in the room. For example, a light blue or turquoise crib might be the perfect color to match the light-colored walls, curtains and headboard. As you work on the interior, choose light-colored accessories to break up the color palette. These include throw pillows, linen and shams with embroidery.

Add a Touch of Scandinavian Tradition

Add a touch of tradition Use elements from the country to decorate the room in a Scandinavian style. Native American pottery and beadwork can add a unique quality to your interior decorating accents, while rustic iron candle sconces and vintage wooden pieces look especially wonderful. If you use pendant light fixtures, you can bring the charm of the southwest out in your bedroom.

Use wood If your bedroom incorporates elements from the southwest such as pueblo style bedding and woodworking, then you can bring this southern inspiration into your Scandinavian bedroom design. In the bedroom, choose a beautiful platform bed in a wood frame with wooden headboards. You can use a light-colored bed cover and a lovely pair of wooden drawers for storage.

Make the Bedroom Feel Comfortable

Bring the earth outdoors In the morning, a Scandinavian bedroom can feel welcoming and intimate. If your bed is in the southwest inspired woodsy style, then add colorful pillows to protect your back from the cool morning air. Add a beautiful quilt to your bedside table. Add a little natural wood throws to your wooden furniture, such as a rocking chair.

Use rugs and pillows If you want to create a more cosy, earthy feeling in your Scandinavian bedroom, then you should use rugs and pillows that are made from organic materials. Natural rugs made from wool are softer than synthetic rugs, which can be much harder on your back. For cozier pillows, choose throws made from wool, which is soft on the back but still durable. Consider using rugs that match or coordinate with your tapestries, curtains and furniture to complete the look.
